Carbon & Energy Management
We have a deep academic appreciation of the environmental issues that face us all. That’s why reducing the energy we use and the carbon we generate is at the very heart of our values.
Energy & Carbon Reduction Commitment
Global warming, climate change, rising energy costs and resource depletion are issues that we, as leaders in environmental research and teaching, are well positioned to help address.
That is why we are resolute in our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions, ambitious in our reduction target and passionate about the projects we are implementing in order to achieve it.
Carbon Management Plan
The Carbon Management Plan (CMP) is where we quantify our energy usage and carbon emissions and bring together our carbon reduction activity. It is our blueprint for changing the ways in which we build, light and heat campus – and travel to and from it. You can read the Plan in full.
Wind Turbine
Lancaster University's wind turbine will generate 11 per cent of the University's energy requirements. That's enough to fulfil half the residential requirements of all students living on campus. Learn more
Biomass boiler
A biomass boiler turns crops grown especially for biomass fuel into energy. Lancaster University's biomass boiler will be used to raise hot water for heating and domestic hot water. Learn more
Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
The refurbishment of the boiler house includes the installation of a new CHP unit that will lead to cleaner, more efficient generation of 20 per cent of the University's electricity. Learn more
Energy Demand Reduction
Campus-wide utility metering. An ICT energy reduction strategy. New boilers and generators that offer improved efficiency. In every aspect of campus life we are seeking to reduce the amount of energy we use. Learn more
Behavior Change and Communication
Changing the way we operate to reduce our energy usage and carbon emissions demands everyone's involvement. We are committed to keeping all our staff, students and the wider community informed of our work, and to encouraging and reinforcing the good habits that make change stick.
Annual Energy and Carbon Reports
How are we doing? You'll find details of our progress against targets, our latest work and next steps in our annual Carbon Management Plan and Environmental Performance Report. Learn more
