THE COLLEGE COAT OF ARMS
By letters patent dated 20th July, 1954, the College of Arms granted to the Fylde Rural District Council a Coat of Arms.
At a full Council Meeting of the Fylde Borough Council on 28th April, 1981 permission was granted for Fylde College of the University of Lancaster to adopt the old Fylde RDC Coat of Arms, without motto, as its own.
Arms "Vert the sales of a windmill saltirewise or on a chief indented of the last a rose Gules barbed and seeded proper between two Foundations."
Crest "Out of a coronet of four cinquefoils set on a Rim Argent a dexter Arm in Armour embowed proper the Hand gauntleted also proper and pendent therefrom a Bugle Horn sable stringed and garnished Or."
The Green background of the Arms is a reference to the Fylde of Lancashire and its individual character is suggested by the conventionalised windmill sails coloured gold to recall the former prosperity of the district through agricultural activity.
The Red shield represents the red rose of Lancashire; the two circles with blue waves represent the rivers Wyre and Ribble which bound the district on the North and South and permit of the drainage of the Fylde, thus contributing to its fertility. The superstructure includes parts of the Coats of Arms of three most known historical families of the district, the Westbys, the Hornbys and the Cliftons.

The motto "In arvo quaerere verum" - seek truth in the field (Fylde) - refers not only to the University motto (Patet omnibus veritas - truth lies open to all) but also to the world outside the University walls. The motto was adopted by the College in the Summer of 1981.
