PREFACE

This annual list covers books, articles, computer programmes, media material and art exhibitions dated and published or mounted in 1997, together with any items not included in previous years. Entries are arranged primarily by department, then by year of publication and alphabetically by author. Students' names are distinguished by an asterisk (*) and those of non-members of the university by a dagger (†). The practice concerning the abbreviation of titles of periodicals is in line with British Standard 4148, Part I, 1970 and Part 2, 1975.

Because of the requirement to cut back levels of service, the former individual bibliographical checking of each published item has been replaced by a reliance on the information submitted to us. I should like warmly to acknowledge the efforts made by departments and sections to compile the materials for this listing and to thank the Central Print Unit for their efficient production of the finished article. Especial thanks are due to Angela Pearson for her invaluable help in typing and checking much of the text.
