Postgraduate study

The University offers a wide range of full-time taught postgraduate courses leading to a Master's degree - the M.A .or M.Sc. - (normally over 12 months full-time) or a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate (normally over 9 or 12 months full-time). It also offers opportunities to carry out research (full-time or part-time) for the degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D.

  • assessment of taught courses usually includes a dissertation or project
  • diploma courses are complete in themselves, but they can also be suitable for those who wish to qualify for entry to a Master's degree course
  • in some subject areas it is also possible to undertake a Master's degree by research - the MRes - (normally over 12 months full-time)
  • all departments are experienced at supervising PhD research
  • all of the research degrees are awarded by examination of a thesis
  • many of the Master's degrees and the PhD can be taken on a part-time basis

  • the University has wide-ranging experience of the special needs of international students, and welcomes applications from suitably qualified students from any country.

Funding

  • The Postgraduate Admissions Office offers guidance on possible sources of funding for postgraduate study at Lancaster University
  • Fees for postgraduate study depend on the type, level and length of the course.
  • Many courses can be taken on a part-time basis.
