University of Central Lancashire

Aims and objectives

  • To design a module to develop intercultural competence at the stages of preparing, experiencing and returning from the period of residence abroad (PRA).
  • To present the module for validation at the University of Central Lancashire

Outline

The module would be based:

  • on information about current good practice in UK HE institutions as presented in the Year 2 sub-project report 'Raising Intercultural Awareness in preparation for periods of residence abroad';
  • on knowledge and insights derived from the work of The Interculture Project and the two other RAM projects;
  • on feedback gained at progress symposia and workshops during the course of the academic year 1999-2000.
The module will concentrate on activities falling within the following two domains:
concepts of culture social and self -awareness
e.g., examining own culture, deconstructing stereotypes... e.g., exploring expectations, setting goals...

It will include information and activities which enhance learning within the domains above, such as:

- The Interculture Project Student Accounts of Residence Abroad database (SARA)

- intercultural incidents analysis

- focus groups

- simulations

- games and quizzes

- discussions with returnees and resident international students

- preparation for cultural assignments

- questionnaires

- diaries

- ethnographic research exercises

It will incorporate such activities into a prototype curriculum which illustrates the sequence in which they may be used and identify areas for further development work in the field.
