Lancaster has welcomed study abroad students since 1968 when we received our first American student. In 1969 we embarked upon a regular Junior Year Abroad programme with the Universities of Colorado, Illinois and Massachusetts and with what is now the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad (formerly Beaver College). Since then numerous other relationships with US and Canadian academic institutions have been established. For more than thirty years, juniors, seniors, and occasionally sophomores from a wide range of private and state universities and colleges in North America have studied for all or part of a year at Lancaster. Lancaster therefore has many years of experience in understanding the academic background and needs of non-UK students studying abroad and in meeting those needs within the University's curriculum and advisory system.

As well as its long established exchange programme with North American universities, Lancaster has exchange agreements with universities in Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Study Abroad and Exchange Student Team

Lancaster has participated in the European Union's Erasmus programme since its inception in the mid-1980s and has exchange agreements with universities and business schools in many EU countries. Each year over 80 European exchange students come to Lancaster.

Study abroad and exchange students at Lancaster are fully integrated into our normal academic program. Your workload will correspond as closely as possible with that of regular second or third (final) year British students and you are integrated into Lancaster's residences, social life and extra-curricular activities. Most students feel quickly at home here and find it easy to meet other students and participate fully in the life of the University.
