INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

13 August – 11 September 2009                                    Pre-sessional website

Lancaster offers three programmes which can either be taken on their own or prior to the fall term at Lancaster or another UK university.  They are designed to prepare international students for study in a British university and to familiarise them with the British approach to learning, teaching and assessment in higher education.  The content of each programme is planned to be interesting and stimulating; it will draw on different academic disciplines in an accessible way; and – depending on which programme is followed – will introduce students to aspects of the British culture and to study in a British university.  Each degree level course is worth 4 US semester credits (8 ECTS credits) and covers a different subject each week.  Weekly field trips are an interesting and valuable part of each course.  A short orientation is also included.

1         Introduction to Britain

This programme covers key elements of British history and culture with regional focus: the Roman occupation of North West England; religious reformation in Elizabethan times; the industrial revolution; and the work of Lake District writers, poets and artists such as William Wordsworth and Turner. The weekly field visits that bring this course to life include Hadrian's Wall and Wordsworth's Lake Distrrict home, Dove Cottage.

2         The World About Us

An exciting journey that encompasses 400 years of scientific discovery - starting with early medicine and taking us all the way to our current understanding of the universe and conservation of the natural world. The programme is enhanced by visits to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds, and five days geological and ecological field work in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales+.

3          Europe in Context

For those planning to travel or work in Europe, or who re interested in world politics and economics, this programme offers a fascinating look at how the European Union came into being and how European countries differ from eachother, culturally and politically. we will explore why Britain has such a turbulent relationship with its European neighbours, and how European law, business and politics affect Britain (and what the Brits think of this!). A highlight of last year's programme was the opportunity to talk to Polish people who are living in the Lancaster area and hear about life as an immigrant in modern europe.

These programmes are offered subject to availability. We reserve the right to vary content if necessary.
