Ruskin and the Practice of Drawing

with pictures by American artist David-Everett Blythe

This display focused on Ruskin's engagement in the teaching of what he called 'the practice of drawing'. It also included examples of his own work showing the development of his drawing style, and his interest in practical techniques.

David-Everett Blythe

 

David-Everett Blythe is a teacher and scholar who has published on 19th century English literature, inlcuding articles on Ruskin. For many years he has been making watercolour copies of pictures by Ruskin, as well as Constable, Turner and other artists.

In following Ruskin, he has tried to pursue the precepts laid down in writings such as The Elements of Drawing, while reproducing the brushstroke and technique of the works themselves
