EDUCATIONAL VISITS

Group visits

The Ruskin Library welcomes group visits during our normal opening hours, although we would, appreciate as much notice as possible to avoid clashes with other groups. Please ring 01524 593587, or email ruskin.library@lancaster.ac.uk to discuss your visit.

Primary School Visits

On a limited number of mornings in the Autumn and Spring terms the Ruskin Library runs workshops for Key Stage 2 children. Whilst the children are with us they take part in two different activities - natural drawing and making simple books. Numbers are restricted to 36 per morning, and the charge is £20 per group.

For details, please ring 01524 593587, or email us at ruskin.library@lancaster.ac.uk.

Natural Drawing

The drawing workshop, which is based on Ruskin's book The Elements of Drawing, involves observational drawing of natural objects. The children are able to choose from a selection of material - bones, shells, plants and flowers in season etc. Initial drawings are done in pencil: others may be made with the aid of magnifying glasses and with a variety of crayons.

This session is held in the Gallery, and whilst there the children will be encouraged to look at, and talk about, the exhibition. They will also see examples of how Ruskin used his own sketchbooks.

The drawings on this page are by children from several local schools.

Making Books

School visit

This workshop begins with a brief introduction to the history of book production: the children will have the opportunity to examine examples of nineteenth-century books.

The staff will then guide pupils through the making of a simple sewn booklet with a decorated cover.

There is a display of book-binding equipment (kindly loaned by Brady Bookbinders), and children will be shown how this relates to the books they are making.

Teachers notes

Teachers Notes

Teachers' notes and other materials are sent in advance to schools participating in the workshops. They contain suggestions for activities relating to the visit, and examples of Ruskin's work

Other leaflets, including those relevant to the exhibition in the Gallery at the time, will be given on the day of the visit.

Children's Leaflets

Each child participating in the workshops will receive a copy of 'A visit to the Ruskin Library'.

Making Books

Making Books

Schools participating in the workshops will be gives copies of our new publication 'Making Books'. It includes instructions for making the books demonstrated in the workshops, along with many other ways of making simple books.

The book is also available, price £3.00 per copy, from the Ruskin Library - see our Publications List .

Other Primary School Visits

It may be possible to arrange workshops at other time: if you need any input from the Ruskin Library staff (including loan of drawing materials) there will be a charge of £20 per school.

Secondary Schools and Colleges

We don't at present have workshops aimed specifically at these age groups, although we have successfully run the 'natural drawing' and 'making books' sessions with Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. We would welcome visits from these groups, and would be happy to discuss ideas to make your visit enjoyable.
