Dean of Graduate Studies

The Dean of Graduate Studies has overall responsibility for:
- Chairing the Graduate School Committee which inter alia advises the Senate on the regulations and actions necessary to promote and govern postgraduate studies at Lancaster.
- Exercising a general responsibility for the proper conduct of postgraduate studies (taught and research) at Lancaster in respect of the following: provision of advice to departments and faculty postgraduate deans; recruitment and admissions policy; the appointment of external examiners; approval of awards (on behalf of the Senate); dealing with postgraduate complaints; provision for postgraduate students; responding to external consultations and keeping up to date with external developments/initiatives which have implications for postgraduate studies at Lancaster; representing Lancaster.
- Liaising with the designated pro-vice chancellor on the promotion and promulgation of strategy relating to postgraduate teaching, learning and assessment, and to postgraduate research activity.
Geraint Johnes is Professor of Economics. He conducts research in the area of labour economics, and has a particular interest in the economics of education. He was founding editor of the journal, Education Economics, and has authored or edited numerous books and articles in this area, including The Economics of Education (Macmillan, 1993) and the International Handbook on the Economics of Education (Edward Elgar, 2004).
