In February 2010 our credit rating was increased from 'A with a stable outlook' to 'A+ with a stable outlook' by Standard and Poor’s as a consequence of our strong academic and financial performance and of progress made with our residences project and wider estates developments.

Research Excellence
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 92% of research at Lancaster was found to be of international quality. 13 of Lancaster’s departments were in the top 20 in the UK for their individual subjects, including:
- Physics ranked 1st in the UK.
- Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (which includes Music, Theatre, Film and New Media) ranked in the UK’s top 3 for Art and Design.
- Biomedicine in Lancaster’s newly established Faculty of Health and Medicine, ranked in the UK’s top 3 (as part of the Allied Health Professions and Studies Unit of Assessment).
- Lancaster University Management School ranked joint 5th in the UK.
- Sociology ranked 5th in the UK.
- 100% of research in Computing was found to be of international quality.
Teaching Excellence
Lancaster is the highest ranked University in the North West of England in the latest National Student Survey and 15th amongst all English Universities, with 88% of students satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of their academic experience.
In 2009 the University underwent an audit by the Quality Assurance Agency and received the highest judgement of broad confidence in the management of the academic standards of its awards and the quality of the learning opportunities available to students.
Investment

Widening Participation, Outreach and Retention
Lancaster University is strongly committed to widening participation and has committed £3.8m for scholarships, bursaries, retention and outreach activities in its OFFA Access Agreement for 2012-13.
Students achieving A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications) will receive a £1,000 per year Lancaster Scholarship during their period of study.
Students from England whose household incomes are less than £25,000 per year will receive a £5,000 combined National Scholarship and bursary package over three years to assist with fees and living costs.
Outreach activities will include attendance at recruitment events throughout the UK, extensive work with schools (including specialist masterclasses and new outreach partnership programme) and running residential summer schools for WP target groups. The University will also continue to conduct widening participation activities through its highly successful student volunteering unit, Involve, managed through Lancaster University Students Union.
