SCC.160 - Fundamentals of Communication Systems

This 25-week module introduced 1st-year undergraduate students to fundamental theories and applications of communication systems and signal processing techniques. Teaching involved an 1-hour lecture per week, an 1-hour workshop per student per week and a 2-hour practical session per student every other week. The 1st term (10 weeks) covered concepts, such as analogue and digital processing (e.g., sampling, quantisation and coding), analogue and digital modulation methods, and time and frequency domain representations. The 2nd term (10 weeks) focused on speech, image and video processing techniques for communication devices. The 3rd term (5 weeks) touched on reliable transmission of information, encryption and cryptanalysis, and satellite communication & navigation systems. SCC.160 was discontinued in 2019 to give way to a revised Part I minor path.

Since the introduction of SCC.160 in the curriculum, I have been responsible for the 3rd term but I have occasionally covered parts of the 1st term too. In the list below, an asterisk (*) appears either next to those years that I was the module convenor (e.g., 2015*) or next to the tutor who was resposible for the module. A number (1 or 2) identifies the tutor who delivered parts of the material of the 1st or 2nd terms. Module statistics focus only on the number of students who were enrolled on the module in the 3rd term (i.e., the term that I covered), the number of students who completed the module evaluation report, and the average score in the category "module as a whole".
