On the field, the team has been asking people reaction when showing them images…

We met A. first, in Piccadilly Gardens. She agreed to be interviewed and both Chris and Jill talked with her…At same time Monica met A.’s dad and had a conversation.

Some notes :

  • being on the bus with headphones so that ‘noone will bother you…’
  • Talks about using Facebook and Google to ‘know everything’…and intimates later that he accesses both on the move, but not perhaps email.
  • Emphasizes later that he goes on facebook to ‘see what everyone else is saying…what’s going on’

All the time Monica is talking with him, asking questions and supplying visual prompts followed up with’questions. Conversation flows freely.

  • Communicates mostly with ‘his daughter’ and ‘his mates’ via mobile technology.
  • Monica asks about uses of technology…he recounts the story of his mum breaking down in a car…having a mobile phone made it easier to get help.
  • Noise from earphones on public transport…he’s ‘not bothered’
  • He and A. walk together with their Ipods  on, both with different music playing, him listening to r&b and A., heavy metal and heavy rock., but he says, they still communicate.
  • Amber’s dad listens to music ‘everywhere’. He says ‘it keeps his mind occupied’
  • Reiterates what he uses on the move…sometimes films, tv series, games and facebook.
  • Speaks about mobile phones facilitating communication between a group of colleagues who once worked together 24-7 (in a hotel?) and who were made redundant. They were able to get in touch with each other afterwards. This leads into him musing on the nature of ‘instant communication’ ‘I can phone my mate in America… and speak to him instantly….whereas before it could take a week ‘(Or more e.g. by letter)
