Meeting 1, March 30th, Lancaster University

This was the first face-to-face meeting of the 6 partners in the network. The meeting was deliberately kept small, since its aim was to discuss how the activities of the network would proceed. Those present were as follows. There was a large Lancaster contingent, since the meeting was based in Lancaster.

Matters discussed

Mike Pidd opened the meeing by welcoming everyone and working through the proposal on which EPSRC granted funds to support the network. (Some of this can be found here). The aim was to hold a series of meetings, initially small and with a restricted attendance, to discuss ideas related to complementarity in systems modelling. The hope was that substantive ideas for research proposals would result.

The network had been deliberately established with an equal number of academic and industrial partners. It was intended that others would be invited to join as work proceeded.

The main participants presented information about their backgrounds and their expectations of the network. To keep the meeting informal, Powerpoint sets were not used, however some had been used to prepare the talks and these are provided below.

In addition, Val Belton and Peter Checkland presented their ideas but without Powerpoint files.

Much of the latter part of the meeting was spent discussing how the network should proceed and  suitable topics for subsequent meetings.
