Diaries and Debriefing for a Period of Residence Abroad

Aims and objectives

  • To make the learning aids developed in Years 1 and 2 widely available;
  • To develop a diary for students on work placements;
  • To publish and disseminate guidelines on the use of mailing lists to support students during a period of residence abroad;
  • To provide links to examples of good practice in integrating the period of residence abroad into the curriculum and
  • To offer some suggestions on de-briefing methods and techniques.

Outline

The sub-project will undertake to provide guidelines on the establishment, use and maintenance of a Year Abroad mailing list. These guidelines will draw on the experience of project members with a mailing list over the previous 18 months and will take the form of (a) a report and (b) bullet points to facilitate the dissemination of suggestions on good practice.

To find examples of good practice in the integration of the PRA into the curriculum, the sub-project will research information offered on HEI's web pages. After selecting examples of good practice, the sub-project will seek to obtain for the web pages to be linked to the Interculture Project website. Where necessary, further information will be obtained from responsible individuals at these HEI's.

Some information on students' perceptions of the integration of their PRA into their final year at the home university will be obtained by interviews with selected students at the sub-project institution and presented in the form of either transcripts of interviews and/or a report on relevant findings.

Outputs/Deliverables

  • Contribution to the Interculture Project website in the form of downloadable diaries;
  • Guidelines on the establishment, use and maintenance of a Year Abroad mailing list;
  • Learner support diaries in French, German, Italian and Spanish for students on work placements;
  • Examples of integration of the Year Abroad into the curriculum and/or debriefing techniques used in other HEI's;
  • Suggestions of debriefing based on activities undertaken in the sub-project institution;
  • Evaluation from students on the integration of the PRA into their final year at the home university.
