Research
My research interests are in distributed systems, cloud computing, microservice architectures, IoT orchestration, and self-adaptive/autonomous systems. I focus on designing and evaluating software architectures that make complex computational systems more scalable, maintainable, cost-effective, and adaptable.
A recent strand of my research investigates how modern distributed systems technologies can support computational modelling and scientific software. Rather than developing domain models myself, I explore how existing modelling systems can benefit from approaches such as microservices, cloud deployment, workflow orchestration, and Infrastructure as Code. This work looks at how monolithic modelling software can be decomposed, deployed, and optimised to improve scalability, resource efficiency, collaboration, and maintainability.
More broadly, my research examines cloud cost optimisation, particularly network-aware deployment planning and data-transfer costs; IoT workflow automation, including the use of Web of Things technologies and Large Language Models; and runtime composition of systems of systems. I am also interested in self-awareness, human-in-the-loop self-adaptation, and intelligent orchestration, with the aim of reducing the complexity of developing, operating, and evolving distributed systems.
My research interests include:
- Distributed systems and microservices architecture
- Cloud resource optimization and cost management
- Self-adaptive and self-healing systems
- Container orchestration and deployment strategies
