This website would not have been possible without the excellent account ‘OR in World War 2: Operational Research against the U-boat’ by C.H. Waddington which covers topics such as how Operational Research Sections functioned within Command Headquarters, the important developments in radar, and decisive tactical approaches introduced by ORS. The ‘Visual Problems’ and ‘The Attack’ sections, which form the bulk of the content of this website roughly follow chapters six and seven of this book. The graphs and diagrams which appear on this website were also taken from it.
Another invaluable source was ‘Operational Research in War and Peace: The British Experience from the 1930s to 1970s’ by M.W. Kirby which provided us with a detailed historical account of the inception of CC-ORS. The others references listed below were used in producing the profiles on the ‘Influential People’ page and some of the fun facts which appear in the side bar.
Thanks also goes to Dr. Dave Worthington of the Lancaster University Management School who first introduced us to this interesting subject.
